Small & Simple

Updated: Jan 29, 2020

I’ve been thinking a lot about the words “small” & “simple”.

I'm discovering the beauty in it.

I like the idea of writing small and simple posts. It’s much more doable.

And as readers, isn’t that what we want? Most of the time, it’s all we can handle. We already have too much to think about and too much to do.

But I think there’s more to it.

The Lord teaches us in little bits, and then we add on to what we already know.

“I will give unto the children of men line upon line, precept upon precept, here a little and there a little” (2 Nephi 28:30).

This is also the way we CHANGE and BECOME. Our progress is so gradual that we can’t always see it over a short period of time.

For example, I didn’t realize I was such an impatient person until I was a mom. My awareness for this flaw made me feel like I was digressing, instead of progressing. But realizing my weakness was actually a step toward overcoming it. And now that I’ve been a mom for 14 years, I can finally see that I am a bit more patient than I was back then.

We live in a fast-paced world where we can get fast food and fast information and fast Amazon deliveries.

But progress is slower. God’s plan wasn’t for us to become perfect quickly. It was meant to take a lifetime AND MORE.

Are we patient enough with ourselves? Our spouses? Our children?

Sometimes I find myself expecting my kids to act like adults. But then when I look at them in context of the plan, I see them as children who are just beginning their journey on earth, and I can be a lot more patient with their childish ways. In fact, I can adore them more for being right where they are.

We can also have HOPE that “by small and simple things…great things come to pass” (Alma 37:6). That is a true pattern in EVERYTHING. We can see BIG results from SMALL efforts, over time.

What small and simple things are you doing that will yield “great” results in the future?

If we keep our minds on the BIG PICTURE of what we are doing, we’ll find a lot more joy in the small things we are doing.

Parents, when we’re making yet another meal, cleaning the house once again, folding the same laundry once again, or waking up early to face another day of work, we can take a minute to remember what we are REALLY doing. We are doing the MOST important thing we could be doing on this earth. We are raising a family unto the Lord. We are sacrificing ourselves to do His work. And in essence, we are learning to become more like Heavenly Father and Mother.
