2020 marks the 25-year anniversary since “The Family: A Proclamation to the World” was issued. As I have learned and taught about this inspired document, I have come to love and appreciate it more and more.
As I study the Book of Mormon this year, I’m going to be looking for what it teaches about families. I’m excited to share some of the connections I find, and hope it can be helpful, regardless of your marital status or family situation.
Here’s my thought from this past week, studying the introduction to the Book of Mormon:
Ever since President Nelson promised us that we could “unleash the power of families” through our Come Follow Me scripture study, I’ve been intrigued by that phrase: “The power of families”. What is that power? Why do we need it? And how could we be blessed with more of it in our home?
The adversary is no doubt attacking THE FAMILY because it is “central to the Creator’s plan…for His children” (proclamation). Satan’s attack is also on EACH family. Mine. Yours. ALL families. President Nelson has warned us that his attacks on our faith and our families are increasing “at an exponential rate” (General Conference, Oct. 2018).
Joseph Smith and his family were also under attack from the adversary. In reading his story once again I was impressed by how much his family helped him, as he suffered intense persecution and opposition. The adversary wanted to destroy him and stop him at any cost. But Joseph was supported by his family, who were faithful, righteous, and loyal. I love how his father believed his story and encouraged him to follow God’s direction. His entire family stood by his side and suffered much because of it. I doubt Joseph could have performed his mission without their help.
In our families, we can help each other draw on the powers of heaven to ward off the attacks of the adversary. We can offer unconditional love for each person, despite their daily mistakes. We can point out the potential in each other. We can fuel each other’s visions, dreams and life missions. In short, we can “love and care for each other” (proclamation), as Joseph’s family did.
We may live in perilous times, but we don’t need to fear. God will help us. He always does. It was His power that cast Satan out of the Sacred Grove. His power is there to bless, heal, and protect our families.
