The Proclamation: A Modern-Day Liahona

Have you ever thought of the Family Proclamation as a Liahona of our day? Look at all the similarities:

A SURPRISE GIFT FROM GOD:

When we received the proclamation in 1995, no one saw it coming. We didn’t even know we needed it. At the time, it seemed to teach what most people believed.

“CURIOUS WORKMANSHIP”:

The proclamation is different and unique. Just think…a single-page document from God that boldly outlines His doctrine and teachings on the family. And it was given to the entire world. No other church or organization in the world has anything quite like it.

IT LEADS US TO THE “MORE FERTILE PARTS” OF THE WILDERNESS:

One Liahona spindle pointed the way for Lehi’s family to go. Similarly, the proclamation is a map or guide for families, showing them how to find true happiness and become an eternal family, by “following the teachings of the Lord, Jesus Christ.”

ONLY WORKS ACCORDING TO OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS & OBEDIENCE:

It’s not enough for us to have the proclamation framed and hanging on a wall in our home. We need to study it and “give heed” to it by living it’s teachings. Only then can we be blessed by it.

A SOURCE OF REVELATION:

The other Liahona spindle had writing appear on it from time to time, giving Lehi’s family specific revelation. When we need guidance in our families, we can turn to the proclamation, and the Spirit will give us specific answers for our families.

The Lord gave us the proclamation 25 years ago, far in advance of when we would need it most. We’ve had time to learn it, receive its doctrine deep into our hearts, and even pass it on to the rising generation.

Have you ever read the proclamation as a couple, or as a family? What ways has your family found to utilize this amazing guide?

Every semester, my college students have an assignment to memorize the proclamation, and then share and discuss it with others. They have had amazing experiences with this! It has facilitated much-needed conversations that build testimonies, and bring more unity & love to their relationships..

No family is perfect. This isn’t about fitting into a pre-set mold. The Lord knows each of us and our unique circumstances. As we strive to follow the proclamation’s teachings, God will meet us where we are at, and help us continue on our journey toward the “promised land” which God has prepared for each of us.
